Cities without Palms (Modern Arabic Literature), by Tarek Eltayeb

In a desperate attempt to save his mother and two sisters from famine and disease, a young man leaves his native village in Sudan and sets out alone to seek work in the city. This is the beginning of Hamza's long journey. Hunger and destitution lead him ever farther from his home: first from Sudan to Egypt, where the lack of work forces him to join a band of smugglers, and finally from Egypt to Europe-Italy, France, Holland-where he experiences first-hand the harsh world of migrant laborers and the bitter realities of life as an illegal immigrant. Tarek Eltayeb's first novel offers an uncompromising depiction of poverty in both the developed and the developing world. With its simple yet elegant style, Cities without Palms tells of a tragic human life punctuated by moments of true joy.

A book about a "Sudanese experience" for non-Sudanese consumption
By Amazon Customer
I am sure this book would have been different if Eltayeb were not a professor in Austria but, rather, living among the people he writes about: those Sudanese who are forced from their homes, villages, towns, country because of economic, political or climate change reasons, and who return home. It is as if the audience Eltayeb is really trying to reach are those who misunderstand, distrust and dislike migrant workers, guest workers, those illegals who live among us. And it is because the reader senses that Eltayeb doesn't know enough about those he writes about, we also get a sense that he doesn't tell us enough, doesn't dig deep enough, doesn't get us to see very much.

Driven from home
By DubaiReader
This novella was short but powerful. It is narrated by nineteen year old Hamza, whose father had remarried and left him, his mother and two sisters, with no support. They had managed for several years with the help of a neighbouring family, but when drought devastated their village and the surrounding areas, the other family moved away. Hamza now feels the weight of responsibility and decides to seek work in the city. He is inexperienced and uneducated, but ready to turn his hand to anything.

He travels on foot, by bus and in trains, firstly to the nearest big city, Omdurman, then on to Khartoum, into Egypt and finally over to Europe - France, Italy and Holland. Work is never easy to find and the line between employment and crime is distinctly blurred. He makes friends on the way and jobs often come via these contacts. As he travels he sends money back to his family but communication from them is sparse and he worries the whole time, missing his home.

I agree with other reviewers that Hamza is not sufficiently overawed by the sights and sounds he encounters in the big cities and doesn't get into as much trouble as he might, given his circumstances, but this did not detract from the book's message for me. In very few, well chosen words, Tarek Eltayeb paints the picture of desperation that would surround a young man, forced to leave behind everything he holds dear, just to save them. I could clearly see how desperation might turn such a man to crime.

An excellent translation and an author to watch. Recommended.

A human story, with little adventure
By lulu
I'm going 4 stars for the portrayal of the human part of leaving home.
I didn't some of the exaggerated/unrealistic parts but can understand them as necessary for the arc of the story. I think the author does a fantastic job in the first 2/3 portraying the true emotions and problems for the main character.
I liked the ending. Without giving too much away( minus how he gets to the end)

I don't know when this story was written ,certainly not a modern story but a gifted writer like Ludwig Ganghofer could write about weeding your garden and make it seem fascinating. I love all his books and I was not disappointed with this one. It was a short story only about a hundred pages.

Rilla of Ingleside, by Lucy Maud Montgomery

This vintage book contains the eighth book in Lucy Maud Montgomery's "Anne of Green Gables" series; "Rilla of Ingleside". In this book the focus has been redirected back to a single character: Anne and Gilbert's young daughter, Bertha Marilla 'Rilla' Blythe. This book is set in World War One, and Jem, Walter, and Shirley, along with Ken Ford, Jerry Meredith, and Carl Meredith, become soldiers and fight alongside the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Europe. This book constitutes another masterful and must-read addition to the famous series, and will appeal to anyone with a love of these books or of Montgomery's other seminal work. Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874 – 1942) was a Canadian writer best known for writing the Anne of Green Gables series. This antiquarian volume is being republished now in an affordable, modern edition - complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

From the Publisher
Focusing on Anne's youngest child, Rilla, this is the moving story of a young girl's headlong rush into maturity during World War I.

From the Inside Flap
Anne's children were almost grown up, except for pretty, high-spirited Rilla. No one could resist her bright hazel eyes and dazzling smile. Rilla, almost fifteen, can't think any further ahead than going to her very first dance at the Four Winds lighthouse and getting her first kiss from handsome Kenneth Ford. But undreamed-of challenges await the irrepressible Rilla when the world of Ingleside becomes endangered by a far-off war. Her brothers go off to fight, and Rilla brings home an orphaned newborn in a soup tureen. She is swept into a drama that tests her courage and leaves her changed forever.

About the Author
Lucy Maud Montgomery was one of the most famous Canadian writers of the twentieth century. She is best known for her books for young adults, particularly Anne of Green Gables and its six sequels.

Anne's daughter Rilla endures the sorrows of World War I
By Lawrance Bernabo
It is certainly hard to begin reading "Rilla of Ingleside," knowing it is the eighth and final book in the Anne of Green Gables series. When it was written in 1921 it was actually the sixth book that L.M. Montgomery wrote in the series. Years later she would add "Anne of Windy Poplars" as the "fourth" book and "Anne of Ingleside" as the sixth, pushing this one to eighth place. The title character is Rilla, born Bertha Marilla Blythe (named for Anne's mother and the old maid who adopted the red-headed orphan), the youngest of Anne and Gilbert's daughters. The novel is set about a decade after Montgomery's previous Anne novel, "Rainbow Valley," which was more about the four children of the new widowed minister John Meredith, who become good friends with the Blythe kids. Most of the novel is set during World War I, which is one of the most interesting aspects of the story for me.

As the novel begins Rilla is almost fifteen years old, with bright hazel eyes and a dazzling smile. Rilla is still looking forward to her first romance and for her the most important thing in the world is going to her very first dance at the Four Winds lighthouse and getting her first kiss from Kenneth Ford. But the story takes a dramatic turn as the shadow of the World War reaches all the way to Ingleside. Her brothers, her friends and her beau go over the ocean to fight in France and Rilla brings home an orphaned newborn in a soup tureen and organizes the Junior Red Cross. Everything takes on new meaning when there is a war going on, waiting to hear from the battlefields of France and Susan wondering when America is finally going to get involved so the Allies can win and the boys can finally come home. American involvement in that war was pretty brief, so what I found fascinating is to see that war from the Canadian perspective, as it drags on year after year.

Young men get killed in a war and that tragedy touches the Blythe family. Then more bad news comes from France, bringing home the nightmare even more. Yet Montgomery creates the possibility of hope in the figure of a faithful dog, waiting at the train station for his master to return. Rilla is not the only one waiting for someone to come home: Una Meredith and Mary Vance are waiting as well. "Rilla of Ingleside" was published in 1921, which means that L. M. Montgomery provided a contemporaneous account of the war as seen from the home front. We learn of what is happening second-hand as we see the impact of the war on the mothers, sisters and girls who were left behind to worry about Paris being shelled by the Germans along with the fate of the Empire and their loved ones. This gives "Rilla" an emotional depth unmatched in Montgomery's work, and also sets up the tragic aspects of the story. While this might be a bit sobering for younger readers, by the time they get to this final novel I believe they will be well prepared. There are certainly comic aspects to the story, but this an emotional tale that provides a satisfying conclusion to the story of Anne Shirley and her family.

THe most heart warming book I have ever read
By A Customer
Rilla Of Ingleside, the 8th book of the Anne of Green Gables series is my ultimate favorite of them all. Though every book was enchanting, each carrying beautiful stories, I feel that Rilla of Ingleside overflows in greatness. I have read this book time and time again and each time I laugh and cry for the beautiful characters and their lives that are so deeply touched by the Great War. Rilla is a girl like many who due to greater circumstances must grow up in a world of fear and fighting, and so she becomes a woman obtaining great character, love and wisdom. The story is beautiful and portrays what many must have gone through during those trying times. Anne in this novel, is not the headstrong girl that she was before, but is a woman and a mother who shows greater courage than in any other book. With all her sons at the front she is still the strongest and most loved kindred spirit. The book shows not what life was like at the front but what life was for those who had to stay behind. This book shows the greater courage that it took to stay at home, to fear the daily news, to hope in tomarrow and to "keep faith."

It's Not About Marilla
By A Customer
To the one who wrote the review saying that she wanted to know what happened to Marilla and that she must have died a lonely death, you forget: Marilla had the twins (their names escape me, Davy was the boy) for company, and it isn't as if Anne abandoned her. She did visit Marilla quite a few times in the other books. It just so happened that Marilla died years before the time of this book.

This is an amazing book. The way Montgomery writes just thrills me and takes me into the book. Every time I read it I lose myself for hours at a time. When *(spoiler)*, well I won't say who, but someone very special dies, I feel almost as if I have lost someone quite close to me.It's such a sad, happy, sweet, sorrowful story, a lot about change and growing up. Which aren't my favorite subjects, but I absolutely love this book. And for you guys who are sitting there saying, "YUCK," I'm sorry, but this book isn't for you. :-) It isn't really even a sappy book at all. It's just... I don't know. Incredibly written. And a great story.

By the way, I am not a kid, I am eighteen, but I didn't want to give out my e-mail address. :-)

Good family drama
By mrsrads
This book is a well written family drama. It spans generations (from World War II to present day) and travels from England, to New York, to Australia, and Switzerland. Delving into the lives and feelings of its characters, it was the sort of book you couldn't put down until you had discovered the last remaining secret to be told. It gets you thinking about people in your own family. No longer are they just Mum and Dad. You think more about what they are like as people: their passions, their thoughts... A good read!

Intense family drama
By Wendy J
Harold is a young sailor who falls in love with impulsive, beautiful Kate. They are unable to make a life together, and Harold meets and marries Maggie. Decades later Harold and Maggie’s middle-aged son, Gregory, is summoned by Kate who reveals long-held family secrets.

I loved how the author takes us on an exploration of the psychology of each of the main characters. Eccentric, charismatic Kate wants the freedom to pursue her acting career, and a perfect love that will never fade. Maggie has suffered disappointments in life and this looks set to continue while she maintains her passive-aggressive stance of putting the needs of others before her own. My favorite character is complex, sensitive Harold. A man who chooses to show to the world what a dull life he leads, but inside, his heart and soul are aflame.

Mostly set in war-time and post-war Britain, the mores and constraints of those times ring true, but what comes across is the fact that in affairs of the heart, the feelings are timeless. Initially the jumping back and forth in time and the different points of view confused me, but very soon this structure creates the excitement of a mystery, which becomes more intense as the story progresses.

If you like stories about people with messy lives, who don’t always behave honorably, but aren’t malicious, then I thoroughly recommend this book.

Autism Rising
By BeatleBangs1964
Forrest and Monica Maguire's only child Ian was diagnosed with autism at age 2. His behavior fit the classic profile of Kanner's Autism. Ian was nonverbal; was inordinately attached to a hand mirror; could not bear spillage on his arm or loud noises.

Ian was plainly very bright. He learned to walk at 15 months and was continent by age two. He had a fascination with numbers; when shown, at age two the danger of falling out of a 7th story window, he envisioned the walls at 7 times their height.

Forrest cannot accept the boy's autism. He melts down when Ian shows no interest in the highly advanced toys he buys him and punishes him for not interacting with other children at a company picnic.

Monica is more accepting of Ian's autism. She enrolls him in a nursery school with disastrous results. Ian found the place upsetting and peers were threats and rivals. They came up at him in "groups of three and four and shouted things in his ears" and he could not predict what they might do. I loved the way he consistently tried to dodge peers. I didn't like it when Monica promised the boy's teacher that she was going to "fill the freezer with pops" and invite every child in the neighborhood over. "Yeah, right," I thought. "Sure they'll come, but they'll only come for the free treats and eats. They won't like Ian or even try to include him in their activities and Ian won't enjoy having them come. You can't make friends for your child. As the Beatles said, 'Can't Buy Me Love' and ice pops won't buy him friends."

Ian's teacher tells Monica that Ian needs more help than the school can provide. She insists that Monica enroll Ian in the Family Rehabilitation League in order for Ian to remain in school. I loved Ian's take on the FRL; he actually thought Monica tricked him by making him endure peers. Ian's fear of peers was palable; when a group of children entered a testing room, one boy urinated on Ian, thus further driving him away from peers.

Monica realizes that FRL is not the answer. Forrest seeks solace in a job offer that requires him to move to Michigan. By then he and Monica have decided to go their separate ways permanently. Monica takes Ian to the Houston-Galveston area for the summer, where he meets an ally named Buzz. A jovial relative, Buzz accepts Ian unconditionally. He even helps Ian dodge a slightly older child who has come to visit. Readers are treated to Ian's thoughts; Ian has pre-natal memories and thinks he came from the sky. A fireworks display upsets him as he thinks his sky home is being demolished.

After a tragedy, Monica and Ian return to Houston, sadder but wiser. A mediocre book, but interesting all the same. The strong point this book has was the plausible portrayal of Ian's autism. Although severely autistic, Ian is plainly quite high functioning.

Letters from a Self-Made Merchant to his Son, by George Horace Lorimer

George Horace Lorimer was an American journalist and author best known as the editor of The Saturday Evening Post. During his editorial reign, the Post rose from a circulation of several thousand to over a million. He is credited with promoting or discovering a large number of American writers like Jack London. Lorimer's Letters From A Self-Made Merchant To His Son is a timeless collection of Gilded Age aphorisms from a rich man - a prosperous pork-packer in Chicago to his son, Pierrepont, whom he 'affectionately' calls 'Piggy.' The writing is subtle and brilliant.

"Remember that when you're in the right you can afford to keep your temper...
By Don Kidwell
...and that when you're in the wrong you can't afford to lose it." Great book loaded with timeless wisdom from an individual I'd have liked to have met given his no nonsense quips. Comes across as very intelligent (maybe no surprise given his being the editor of the Saturday Evening Post at one time) and includes a very good image gallery at the close with references to the Armor meat-packing company that had me hunting for more info on the internet. Very good book and leave you with one other quote I really liked, "Puttimg off an easy thing makes it hard, and putting off a hard one makes it impossible."

Timeless wisdom
By Glacier72
This book is a terrific read with timeless insights and wisdom about making your way in the world. Sure it's old school, but dont let that dissuade you. I docked a star because this particular reprint has an incredibly small typeface/font. Easy to find .pdf downloads, however I wanted a bound copy to give as a gift. This will suffice but not ideal.

'A blackly comic psychological thriller that captivates as it slides inexorably towards its finale’ Sunday Times

‘A brilliantly surreal thriller’ Spectator

Jack Raphael’s life is in ruins. He’s unemployed, broke and, worst of all, the love of his life, Mills, has just broken his heart.
Then, one dark day, he sees Mills - but she doesn’t see him. Unable to control himself, Jack follows her home and, when the heavens open, he does something that will change his life forever. To escape the rain, he creeps into her house - and stays there.
At first, it’s just for a few days, no more than a stopgap. But this apparently innocent arrangement has a problem: Jack doesn’t actually tell Mills he’s there and soon, inevitably, things go horribly wrong.
Thrillingly intense, poetic, and laced with black humour, Memoirs of a Stalker is unlike any novel you will have read.
From the author: How far would you go for love? Sometimes it doesn’t seem like a decision; events have a way of following on from each other. That’s the way it goes for my main character, Jack, who finds himself, rather to his surprise, living for months on end concealed in his ex-girlfriend’s house. What attracted me to the story was what you might call its Robinson Crusoe element. How does he survive, stranded in this house, and isolated by his need to remain undetected? How does he eat, when does he sleep, where does he go to the loo? Does he speak? If so, to whom? This being a novel, we can hear the voice in his head, justifying, plotting, self-questioning. There’s always something a little unnerving about any first-person narrator (who is he *talking* to?) and that suited my hero just fine. The book was a lot of fun to write, even the darker, more demented passages. I hope it’s fun to read. Thomas W. Hodgkinson

Highly addictive!
By Wuselstar
Absolutely fantastic. I couldn't stop reading it, I needed to know how everything was going to play out, even though the entire situation hints at what is -most probably- going to happen, you still need to know- in short: this book is highly addictive!
You cannot help but love the characters, especially "Jack", the stalker himself- and his "voice " telling us this story full of charming and witty conversations mixed with utter madness, love and horror, poetry and superficiality all mixed in a whirlwind that moves faster and faster...

Why hasn't this book been made into a Mini-Series?
By texana tolstoy
I have just read this book for the 4th time in 20 years. It's a book I often go back and re-read, which is very rare for me. It's intriguing, with true to life characters, mystery, history, and just a plain old good story. If you see it at a used book store or garage sale, grab it. Everyone I lend it to loves it. The story, one of my favorite genres, is about 3 women whose lives are linked and how they intertwine. There's also a history of how Galveston lost it's position as the major Texas port to the upstart town of Houston. The great storm of 1900 and the Great Fire are also players in this book. I wish I knew if this author has written anything else (can't tell for sure from Amazon's information). If she hasn't, too bad for us readers. However, I don't know how she could top this one. It's an historical fiction/romance/mystery/gothic tale all wrapped into one. Highly recommended!!

Galveston
By Amazon Customer
Absolutely one of my favorite books! I read it the first time nearly 30 years ago, and have recommended it (and loaned it out) to lots of friends, who have also loved it! I recommended it to a friend & co-worker, who lives in Galveston and she, in turn, shared it with her mother. They especially enjoyed the hometown aspects of this wonderful book. It is the multi-generational story of three women, linked together by a city, and actual historical events, that shaped their lives and their destinies! It is a truly a gem! I have always thought that it would make a great movie!

Amazon.com Review
Though not the first novel she wrote, Sense and Sensibility was the first Jane Austen published. Though she initially called it Elinor and Marianne, Austen jettisoned both the title and the epistolary mode in which it was originally written, but kept the essential theme: the necessity of finding a workable middle ground between passion and reason. The story revolves around the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne. Whereas the former is a sensible, rational creature, her younger sister is wildly romantic--a characteristic that offers Austen plenty of scope for both satire and compassion. Commenting on Edward Ferrars, a potential suitor for Elinor's hand, Marianne admits that while she "loves him tenderly," she finds him disappointing as a possible lover for her sister: Oh! Mama, how spiritless, how tame was Edward's manner in reading to us last night! I felt for my sister most severely. Yet she bore it with so much composure, she seemed scarcely to notice it. I could hardly keep my seat. To hear those beautiful lines which have frequently almost driven me wild, pronounced with such impenetrable calmness, such dreadful indifference! Soon however, Marianne meets a man who measures up to her ideal: Mr. Willoughby, a new neighbor. So swept away by passion is Marianne that her behavior begins to border on the scandalous. Then Willoughby abandons her; meanwhile, Elinor's growing affection for Edward suffers a check when he admits he is secretly engaged to a childhood sweetheart. How each of the sisters reacts to their romantic misfortunes, and the lessons they draw before coming finally to the requisite happy ending forms the heart of the novel. Though Marianne's disregard for social conventions and willingness to consider the world well-lost for love may appeal to modern readers, it is Elinor whom Austen herself most evidently admired; a truly happy marriage, she shows us, exists only where sense and sensibility meet and mix in proper measure. --Alix Wilber

From Library Journal
Austen's novels (e.g., Pride and Prejudice, Audio Reviews, LJ 11/1/92) have lately received so much well-deserved media attention that another version of her first novel, in yet another format, may appear redundant to persons not sufficiently acquainted with the author's charms. However, for her many admirers, both present and future, this new audiobook is a treasure, thanks to a superb reading by actress Susannah Harker. The talented narrator is an ideal interpreter of Austen's delightful paean to the virtue of sense as she traces the struggles of her young heroines to achieve happiness. Harker skillfully captures each character's personality through subtle inflection, and she keenly, yet unobtrusively, underscores the author's delicious irony. With a reading of such quality, the romantic predicaments of the Miss Dashwoods become all-absorbing and the hours fly by too quickly. Most highly recommended for all libraries.

The sensible and the sensitive
By EA Solinas
One of the Dashwood daughters is smart, down-to-earth and sensible. The other is wildly romantic and sensitive.

And in a Jane Austen novel, you can guess that there are going to be romantic problems aplenty for both of them -- along with the usual entailment issues, love triangles, sexy bad boys and societal scandals. "Sense and Sensibility" is a quietly clever, romantic little novel that builds up to a dramatic peak on Marianne's romantic troubles, while also quietly exploring Elinor's struggles.

When Mr. Dashwood dies, his entire estate is entailed to his weak son John and snotty daughter-in-law Fanny. His widow and her three daughters are left with little money and no home.

Over the next few weeks, the eldest daughter Elinor begins to fall for Fanny's studious, quiet brother Edward... but being the down-to-earth one, she knows she hasn't got a chance. Her impoverished family soon relocates to Devonshire, where a tiny cottage is being rented to them by one of Mrs. Dashwood's relatives -- and Marianne soon attracts the attention of two men. One is the quiet, much older Colonel Brandon, and the other is the dashing and romantic Willoughby.

But things begin to spiral out of control when Willoughby seems about to propose to Marianne... only to abruptly break off his relationship with her. And during a trip to London, both Elinor and Marianne discover devastating facts about the men they are in love with -- both of them are engaged to other women. And after disaster strikes the Dashwood family, both the sisters will discover what real love is about...

At its heart, "Sense and Sensibility" is about two girls with completely opposite personalities, and the struggle to find love when you're either too romantic or too reserved for your own good. As well as, you know, the often-explored themes in Austen's novels -- impoverished women's search for love and marriage, entailment, mild scandal, and the perils of falling for a sexy bad boy who cares more for money than for true love... assuming he even knows what true love is.

Austen's formal style takes on a somewhat more melancholy flavor in this book, with lots of powerful emotions and vivid splashes of prose ("The wind roared round the house, and the rain beat against the windows"); and she introduces a darker tone near the end. Still, there's a slight humorous tinge to her writing, especially when she's gently mocking Marianne and Mrs. Dashwood's melodrama ("They gave themselves up wholly to their sorrow, seeking increase of wretchedness in every reflection that could afford it").

And Marianne and Elinor make excellent dual heroines for this book -- that still love and cherish each other, even though their polar opposite personalities frequently clash. What's more, they each have to become more like the other before they can find happiness. There's also a small but solid supporting cast -- the hunting-obsessed Sir John, the charming Willoughby (who has some nasty stuff in his past), the emotional Mrs. Dashwood, and the gentle, quiet Colonel Brandon, who shows his love for Marianne in a thousand small ways.

"Sense and Sensibility" is an emotionally powerful, beautifully written tale about two very different sisters, and the rocky road to finding a lasting love. Not as striking as "Pride and Prejudice," but still a deserving classic.

An Excellent Introduction to Jane Austen's Works
By Debbie Lee Wesselmann
Although SENSE AND SENSIBILITY is not of one Jane Austen's best novels, it is nonetheless a major novel, with the author's then-young talent in full display. Its publication in 1811 marked Austen as a huge literary talent, and its significance reverberates even today as contemporary readers re-discover the works of this author so adept at uncovering the foibles of nineteenth century aristocracy.
The title refers to the two eldest Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, one of whom (Elinor) embraces practicality and restraint while the other (Marianne) gives her whole heart to every endeavor. When the Dashwoods - mother Mrs. Dashwood, Elinor, Marianne, and youngest sister Margaret - are sent, almost impoverished, to a small cottage in Devonshire after the death of their father and the machinations of their brother's wife, they accept their new circumstances with as much cheer as they can muster even though their brother and his wife have taken over the family estate and fortune. Their characters, albeit wildly different in their approaches to life, are impeccably honest and intelligent - and their suitors take notice. Elinor falls in love with the shy, awkward Edward, while Marianne's affections are lavished on the dashing hunter Willoughby. As in all Austen's books, love and marriage don't come easily, as affections aren't always returned and social jockeying sometimes takes precedence to true love. In an interestingly twist, the end of this novel brings into question which sister represents which part of the title.
SENSE AND SENSIBILITY only hints at the social skewering Austen would use to such great effect in her later novels, and the humor here is only occasional and slight, as this novel adopts a generally serious tone. Parody is largely limited to the gossipy Mrs. Jenkins, who jumps to wild conclusions about situations she knows nothing about. Though arranged marriage and true love figure prominently in all of Austen's novels, this novel focuses almost exclusivity on the prospects of the two main characters, making it less complex than the novels that followed. Reserved Elinor and exuberant Marianne are expertly drawn, with Edward, Willoughby, and Colonel Brandon (whose lovesick hopes for Marianne are dashed again and again) also engaging creations. Except for the first page or two where the circumstances of the Dashwoods are set up through a series of deaths and relations, possibly causing some confusion, this novel is exceedingly easy to follow for contemporary readers.
This novel is an excellent introduction to Jane Austen's works because of its relative simplicity (though readers should not dismiss it as simple) and the use of typical themes and social situations. Book clubs and students might want to explore the influence of money on nineteenth century British society as well as the meaning of the title as it applies to both the sisters and the other characters. It is also interesting to note both the helplessness and the extraordinary power of women in different circumstances.
Just because this is not Austen's best novel, I could not take away a single star because it is such a delightful book. I highly recommend this novel for all readers.

One of the most beautiful books I own
By Rebecca Taylor
Sense & Sensibility has been reviewed ad infinitum, but I wanted to say that this is one of the most beautiful books I own.

I was looking for a series of classics that I could purchase in hardcover to spruce up my personal library. I stumbled upon these special editions from Penguin Classics, with covers designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith. I love books, but these books still make me giddy with delight when I pick them up. The covers have so much character and they're sturdy. The fonts are classic and easy to read, and the paper is substantial. The ribbon bookmarks, that match the cover, are a really nice touch. The only bad thing I can say, and it's so minor, is that the binding is a little stiff when the book is new. It loosens as you read.

There are more titles available, though some are still exclusive to the UK. I truly hope Amazon and Penguin make all editions available in the US and keep them coming!

White Fang, by Jack London

A companion novel to Jack London's The Call of the Wild, White Fang is the story of a wild dog's journey toward becoming civilized in the Canadian territory of Yukon at the end of the nineteenth century. White Fang is characteristic of London's precise prose style and innovation use of voice and perspective. Much of the novel is written from the viewpoint of the animals, allowing London to explore how animals view their world and how they view humans. White Fang relies on his instincts as well as his strength and courage to survive in the Yukon wildernessdespite both animal and human predatorsand eventually comes to make his peace with man. Jack London spent a year living in the Yukon and drew heavily upon his experiences there while writing the book. He later said, "It was in the Klondike that I found myself."

From School Library Journal
Gr 2-4–London's novel portrays the interior life of mistreated part-wolf White Fang while exploring the fundamental nature of wild animals and the brutality inherent in vast Alaskan landscapes and inside men's hearts. It does not seem suitable reading material for primary-grade children, and Lutin's picture-book adaptation does not make an effective argument for the attempt. From the first page, in which White Fang's half-dog mother runs with her mate, One-Eye, Lutin falters; London revels in detailing natural impulses and viciousness, but this adaptation betrays his text with a ludicrous statement about the pair's love for one another. Later pages similarly fail to capture the spirit of London's harsh study of instinct and domestication. Guilloppe's visually arresting illustrations may appeal to some comic-book fans, and several spreads effectively use striking silhouettes to convey menace and action without gruesome detail. But overall, the digital artwork's strong lines and vivid colors feel disappointingly flat, lacking the nuance and delicate power of a natural landscape. While the adaptation glosses over many troubling and violent subplots, like initial owner Gray Beaver's descent into alcoholism and White Fang's repeated beatings and deadly dog fights, Lutin includes two gunshots. Many readers enjoy stories of nature, wilderness, and survival; books by Jean Craighead George, Gary Paulsen, and Roland Smith should more than suffice until they choose to explore Jack London's savage classics unchanged.–Robbin E. Gr. 6-8. Ed Young, whose haunting illustrations of the wolf made his Caldecott- winning Lon Po Po (1989) so memorable, was well chosen as the illustrator for the Scribner Illustrated Classics edition of White Fang. Jack London's 1906 novel. As many will remember, London tells the story of a wolf-dog who endures great cruelty before he comes to know human kindness. The 12 pastel illustrations illuminate the text with their dramatic use of light and dark, sensitively delineated forms, and soft, subtle shades of color. A handsome new edition of a longtime favorite. Carolyn Phelan

From the Publisher
The Call Of The Wild is the story of Buck, a dog stolen from his home and thrust into the merciless life of the Arctic north to endure hardship, bitter cold, and the savage lawlessness of man and beast. White Fang is the adventure of an animal -- part dog, part wolf --turned vicious by cruel abuse, then transformed by the patience and affection of one man.

Jack London's superb ability as a storyteller and his uncanny understanding of animal and human natures give these tales a striking vitality and power, and have earned him a reputation as a distinguished American writer.

Great Story
By Cheryl Koopmann
This is a great story that I have read many times. It is one of those books that I fall back on when I need a comforting story to read.
It follows the life of one poor dog as he moves from one master to another, and even ends up as a fighting dog at one point. Its a bit like "Black Beauty" I guess seeing as it follows an animals life, but white fang is more of a story. White Fang is not just some docile horse but a real wild dog that has survived where others haven't. A great read and a great story.

Adventure in the Wild
By Paul McGrath
As a boy I used to love books like this, about untamed nature and woodlore and woodcraft, but it has been many years since I've read them. I recently had the occasion to revisit this excellent novel, and found that it has aged quite well and is still a terrific read.

The story has to do with a wolf named White Fang, and begins before he was born, with his father and mother leading a pack in the dead of winter in the frozen Canadian wilderness. There is no game around and all are starving. They harass and harry a beleaguered dog-sled team over the course of several days, picking the dogs off one by one, then finally surrounding the one remaining man. He builds a ring of fire to protect himself from these ravenous wolves, but knows he soon must succumb to exhaustion. He notices the she-wolf, sitting patiently outside the ring, seemingly indifferent--except for the string of drool coming out of her mouth in anticipation of making a meal out of him.

That is the lesson here, in this story of White Fang. It is a savage world, a world in which you either kill or are killed, eat or are eaten. His first day out of the den he kills and eats a small bird, then in turn is almost eaten by a hawk. He observes a porcupine roll itself into a ball to defend itself against a lynx, then observes the lynx yowl in pain after foolishly getting stung. The lynx plays another prominent role. Trying to survive a typical lean winter, White Fang's mother takes the desperate step of going to the absent lynx's den to eat its offspring. The enraged lynx later comes to their den and attacks, but with the help of a growing White Fang, they defeat it. It also becomes a meal.

White Fang eventually gets taken in by men, first an Indian tribe where he is "tamed" with brutality, then by white traders who use him for their own base purposes. Through it all we see the cruel world in which he lives and feel his pain and hunger and anger. It is a well-plotted adventure carefully observed, and serves as a great reminder of how savage the untamed wilderness is, and that mankind is often only a bare step above it.

When the way of the wild was a fact of life
By Linda Linguvic
Written almost of century ago by Jack London, both of these stories have truly stood the test of time. Both of them are based on London's experience in the Yukon, and both are written from the point of view of dogs.
In "The Call of the Wild", the dog Buck is kidnapped from an easy life and sold to a sled team during the Klondike Gold Rush. In spite of the numerous cruelties inflicted on him, Buck learns to survive. Eventually, he returns to the wild and to run with the wolves.
In "White Fang", the story is reversed. White Fang is three-quarters wolf and was born in the wild. Through a series of events, he is domesticated and eventually becomes a tame and loving pet.
There is much to learn in both of these stories. One thing is the way of animals and their life in the wild. Another is of the way of life in the Yukon. And of the men, both brutal and kind, who rely on the dogs to pull the sleds.
Jack London used his words well. There's an elegant cadence and a vigorous spirit. His love for the animals comes through as well as his respect for the wild forces of nature. And the theme that life changes are really possible because of environmental forces.
London didn't set out to write a story about the glorification of nature or vanishing wildlife. Indeed, during his short lifetime (1876-1916) the way of the wild was a fact of life. London just simply wrote his stories. And through his words, left a legacy of work that will continue to enrich the lives of readers for many generations to come.
