Four and a half stars: A creepy and thrilling tale that blends ghosts from different eras.

Ellie and Stacie are ready to take on their next case. They have been hired to investigate a death in the elegant and quite haunted Lathrop Grand Hotel. The hotel has hosted and entertained guest for one hundred and fifty years. The Lathrop has one famous ghost, Stabby Abby, a Confederate nurse who reportedly slashed the throats of Union Soldiers. Abby has been around for years, but for whatever reason, the paranormal activity has reached a new and dangerous level. Recently when construction workers were renovating the mysterious fourth floor, things turned deadly. Has Abby continued her murderous ways?

What I Liked:
*I am always thrilled to plunge into the next Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper Series because I know I will get an exciting and creepy tale with plenty of ghosts and history as well as fun gadgets and gizmos for capturing ghosts. If you are a fan of real life ghost hunters, this is a fun series that you need to check out.
*One of the things I love the most about this series is that all of the hauntings have a long and interesting history. I always enjoy when Ellie goes digging into the past to uncover who is behind the haunting and why. The series is set in Savannah, a city with a long, ghostly history, and I often wonder if Mr. Bryan uses real life ghost tales for the books.
*House of Whispers was my favorite book in the series to date. What made this book exciting was that it was set in a hotel with a long and sordid history. It has many ghosts from different eras. For instance, there is Stabby Abby, the hotel's most notorious ghost who haunts room 208. Abby was a young Confederate nurse who slashed the throats of enemy soldiers. Along with Abby, there are numerous Union Soldiers, as well as some yellow fever victims. Then there are the dangerous ghosts up on the fourth floor from the twentieth century. This group of ghosts in life were dabbling in spiritualism, psychic energy and other dangerous paranormal activity. It is up to Ellie and Stacie to sort through the hauntings and determine who is causing the problems. I thought the hotel was an excellent setting, with its long history and deaths, it was a creepy backdrop.
*I love the relationship between Ellie and Stacie. They work well together, and balance each other perfectly. Ellie is straight forward, serious and she is very aware of how dangerous her job is. Stacie is the opposite. She is more carefree and upbeat. She is quick to crack a joke or a smile, and she is a bit wacky. I enjoy watching them work together to trap the ghosts. Along with Jacob, the psychic, they make a terrific team. Speaking of Jacob, he continues to be fascinating. I always look forward to his psychic readings of each haunted spot.
*The ending is fast, furious and shocking. I have to admit, I didn't see it coming. It was a whirlwind. However, once the dust settled, I was completely satisfied with the way it all went down. I also love that this series refrains from cliffhangers. You get a complete ghost mystery with each book, which makes them all the more addictive. Yes, you can pick them up and read them out of order, but of course, they read best in sequential order.
And The Not So Much:
*This book picks up a theme from the last book regarding Ellie's boss wanting to sell the business. While there is a bit of development with that story line, I was left hanging. I was hoping for more resolution.
*While I loved that the ending caught me off guard and that it was a bit of a shocker, I wish that the reader had been clued into Ellie's reasoning. I wanted a better understanding as to what tipped her off as to who the real villain was. I was confused as well over how the young girl was kidnapped. Was she taken from her room or from somewhere else and how? I also wanted a bit more aftermath.
*I adore Jacob and Michael, and I keep hoping that we will get a bit more romance. We need more of the guys.
House of Whispers is my favorite book in the series to date. I loved the creepy setting, and the abundance of ghosts from different eras. This is a highly addictive series, and I appreciate that you can pick one of the books up and read it in a couple of hours and get a full story. If you are wanting a ghostly read on the realistic side, this is the perfect series for the Fall season. If you love ghosts, you must read these books!

Ellie and the gang back at work

I must start by saying that I really enjoy the Ellie Jordan series. I'm a true paranormal ghost lover and Ellie is a fantastic character. This book was as good as the rest have been. It had a bit of a different feel to it than the others have, though. I'm not quite sure what it was, perhaps that she was working with the agency that's looking to buy them out. Maybe it's because there were a whole lot more ghosts this time around, I'm not sure. It just didn't feel quite up to par to me. It was still very enjoyable, it just felt different. It is quite a bit darker subject matter and seems heavier. Now that I've talked through it a bit, that's most likely what it was I was feeling. As I said, it's not bad, it just has a different feel to it.

Ellie is as sharp as ever. Stacey is as cute and peppy as always. Grant is as dapper and Southern as you expect. I always wish there was more of him. He's such a fun character and always makes me smile.

We do learn a bit more about the agency looking to purchase Eckhart Investigations. It will be interesting to see what happens with that next. A lot of things come out during this book that call into question the other agency. Not that we didn't question them already, but now it's even more suspect.

I will continue to read this series. It's one that I really enjoy and it makes me happy that each case is wrapped up at the end of each book. No cliffhangers here. The only cliffhanger is the future of EI, but I think Ellie will make sure things are under control. Definitely a book to pick up if you enjoy the series, and if you like ghosts and the paranormal, grab any of the series and get comfy!

Another haunting Ellie Jordan book!

So my least favorite part of the book is when I flipped to the back page and it said ***spoiler alert*** Ellie Jordan #6 wouldn't be out until Feb!!!!
Seriously!
I don't want to wait that long!

Everything before that was pure Ellie Jordan magic. I love that these books are scary as hell, funny, and have a little bit of romance. Ellie and Stacey have the best friend chemistry I've seen in a long time. It's nice to see two women who are friends with each other in literature. Usually a kickbutt heroine like Ellie is a lone wolf or only hangs out with dudes. I love watching their relationship grow as the series progresses.

Each haunted world is fleshed out and built with enough intrigue to keep turning the pages. I love spooky haunted places from the comfort of my own home, and J.L. Bryan delivers time and time again.

If you're in the mood for spooky reads then pick up the Ellie Jordan series, it's definitely one of my favorites

Forbidden Pleasures

When Jade called to invite me, as well as Misty and Star, to her home for our first official meeting of the OWP's, my heart seemed to wake up and beat happiness as well as blood through my veins and arteries. My whole body came alive and lifted as if some heavy chains had been broken. I could almost hear them shatter and clank at my feet.

Geraldine was busy preparing our dinner, cleaning the vegetables for our salad, inspecting every carrot, every lettuce leaf for some imperfection and then pausing to baste the roast chicken, but always listening with one ear tilted in my direction. Our downstairs phone was on the kitchen wall near the door and I had no phone in my room. The only time I could have any privacy during a personal call was when she was upstairs, out of the house, or in the bathroom. The moment I cradled the receiver, she spun on her heels, demanding to know who had called.

"It was Jade," I announced, unable to hide my excitement, "inviting me to her house for a brunch."

"Jade?" Geraldine's small eyes narrowed into suspicious slits, darkened with accusations, fears, and threats. "Isn't she one of them?"

Geraldine usually referred to the other girls in my group therapy as "Them." It made it sound as if they were all monstrous, alien creatures. If they were monstrous, what was I in her eyes? I wondered. She blamed everything on my father when she spoke about it, if she ever spoke about it, but deep down in my heart, I believed she blamed me as well. I could see it and feel it in the way her eyes lingered on me like two tiny spotlights of accusation.

After all, I thought, she had made me feel as if there was something polluted about me because I had been born a child out of an adulterous affair, even if the adulterer was her own mother. Sin was always something contagious in Geraldine's eyes. Why shouldn't she believe I had inherited a tendency toward it?

I couldn't remember her ever looking at me with pleasure, and certainly never with pride. She was always searching for something to criticize as if she had been given the responsibility of ensuring that I never wandered from the path of righteousness, her righteousness. My premature voluptuous figure only reinforced her tarnished image of me. Once she even told me it meant I'd be oversexed, and she always talked about sex as if it was a disease. She often tried to make me feel ashamed of what I looked like and she had even gone so far as to try to prevent me from having a female figure as long as she could, making me wear what were practically straight-jackets when my body started to develop.

"She's one of the girls, yes," I said finally, hoping she wouldn't start criticizing Jade and the others as she had done so many times in the past.

"The girls? You mean those girls from Doctor Marlowe's clinic?" she asked, grimacing as if she had just bitten into a rotten walnut.

Geraldine never had approved of the therapy sessions. She hated the idea of strangers knowing anything intimate about us. She would have had me keep it all locked inside, no matter what damage it did to me. In her way of thinking, you swallowed the bad with the good and you locked it inside and worked, worked, worked, keeping yourself busy to forget whatever was unpleasant or ugly.

"Doctor Marlowe never referred to it as a clinic, Mother. You know we went to her office in her home. You make it sound terrible, like a hospital or a research lab or something with the four of us being treated like guinea pigs," I told her.

She grimaced again, only with more disgust this time. Geraldine could twist her mouth until it almost looked like a corkscrew. She was so thin these days, she hardly had a cheek to pull in, but it dipped in like the center of a saucer when she turned her lips.

"It's just a bunch of hocus-pocus, all this psychological mumbo-jumbo. What did people do before all this counsel and analysis, huh? I'll tell you," she said quickly. As she often did, Geraldine asked a question that she had already answered to her liking in her own mind. "They gritted their teeth and they endured. It made them stronger.

"Nowadays, you have all these moaners and groaners, crying and complaining as soon as they're in the least bit of difficulty. They're even on television -- television! And why? To tell the most personal things! People have no shame anymore. They are willing to tell complete strangers their most private secrets and business, for the whole world to see and know. Disgusting.

"We're just thinning the blood with all this stupidity," she insisted, "thinning the blood, making ourselves weak and pitiful. There's no grit. People have no self-respect and these so-called doctors just encourage it all."

"Doctor Marlowe has helped us, Mother, helped all of us through very difficult times," I insisted.

"Um," she said, grinding her teeth. "Well, I don't want you associating yourself with such girls. I didn't like the idea of that doctor bringing you all together like that in the first place. It wasn't healthy."

"But I like them and they like me. We have..."

"What?" she snapped. "What do you have?"

"A lot in common," I said.

She stared at me, her eyes turning red with fear and shock.

"You mean, they...their daddies..."

"No, they each have a different problem, none of them like mine," I said quickly.

She recovered instantly, whipping her upper body ramrod straight. She hated anything that even vaguely suggested what had happened.

"What good will come of you being around girls with problems, Cathy? You're just going to poison the well some more. They can't be good influences. If you were sick with pneumonia, would it be good for you to hang around with patients sick with tuberculosis? No, of course not. If this Doctor Marlowe thought you were in need of help, why would she mix you in with other girls who were sick, too? To make more money, faster, that's why," she said.

"No, that's not true. It was a technique..."

"Technique," she spat. "They have all sorts of words, to cloud the truth and get away with their hocus-pocus. I don't want you having anything more to do with those girls, hear?"

"But -- "

"No but's, Cathy. I have all the responsibility now. Always did," she spat. "You go off and get into trouble with some disturbed teenage girls and I have more to handle. It's enough running this house and making sure you get what you need."

"But I need friends, too!"

"Friends, yes, but not mental cripples," she insisted, and turned her back on me.

"They're not mental cripples. If they're mental cripples, what am I?"

She was silent.

"I'm going," I asserted.

She slammed a pot down on the counter so hard, I felt my insides jump into my throat. Then she turned toward me, wagging the pot she gripped in her hand like a club.

"You'll not be disobedient now," she warned. "I'm legally your mother and I'm still the one responsible for you, and you'll obey, hear?"

I stared at her. Suddenly, she turned from flushed red to the whitest pale and fell back against the counter.

"Mother, what's wrong?" I cried.

She waved me off.

"Nothing," she said, taking a deep, and what looked like a painful, breath. "It's just a little dizzy spell. Go tend to your own chores. I'll be calling you to set the table soon."

She clutched her stomach and chest as if to keep everything inside and turned her back to me. I waited and watched until she straightened up her bony shoulders, this time with more effort, and then returned to what she was doing. She moaned under her breath, but said no more. I watched her for a moment before leaving the kitchen.

I was determined to go to Jade's house. I wouldn't be shut out. I hadn't told Geraldine that the brunch was tomorrow. I would sneak out and go, I thought. I would just use her golden rule: what she doesn't kno

This is more like it!

This book was the best of the all the books in the series. The real VC Andrews "style" showed all through the book, making the pages turn quicker and quicker. I hope they stop doing mini series, becasue it really isn't like VC Andrews would have done it. I hope they go back to large novels for books in a series, instead of a mini series. But for now, I am happy to say I loved this book!

Best V.C. Andrews novel in a long time

Into the garden is really good, in fact one of the best V.C. Andrews novels in a long time. I didn't like the rest of the wildflower series, but this book made up for it. I was also glad because of the variety of characters in this book, there is a black girl and a not so thin girl. All of V.C. Andrews characters are usually the same size six white girls, but this book had some variety. What I didn't like about this book is Jade and her hollier-than thou I'm rich and you're not attitude. Overall the book is good, and the ending is dramatic, sweet, and in a way sad. I recommend this book if you are a true VC Andrews fan. I know a lot of people have stop reading VC Andrews novels because of the drab miniseries runaways and wildflowers, but this book is V.C. Andrews true style. I heard the next series Rain is back to VC Andrews true style too

Into the Garden

I recently read the book, "Into the Garden" (pub. 1999) by V.C. Andrews. The book was about a group of four friends who call themselves "the orphans with parents" or OWP's for short. In the beginning, the main character's (Cat) mother dies. After she dies, the four girls take over her house and turn it into their headquarters. This book reminds me a lot of another book by V.C. Andrews called "Runaways" (pub. 1997) which was also about four friends. One difference is that in "Runaways" the girls were really orphans, and in "Into the Garden" the girls had parents, and called themselves orphans. The main character, Cat, is very interesting. She is kind of paranoid about everything the girls do. The rest of the girls try to get her to loosen up. They pretty much redo the whole house that they have taken over for their "headquarters". Then they all take turns staying the night there with Cat, where they plot some pretty decitful things. This story was a very good story about some mischevious young girls, and it was very interesting and held my attention all the way through. The only thing I didn't like about it, was that it was so similar to Runaways.
